In 1908 she ran for the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Colorado as the Democratic candidate. Cook ran for a second term in 1910, but lost to Republican Helen M. Wixson.

Mary E. Gill was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Larimer County, Colorado in 1899. She was elected to two additional terms. In 1899 Gill ran on the Silver Republican ticket and was listed as a Fusion candidate on the election ballot. For the election held two years later Gill switched to the Democratic party.
