Kate Smith, a Republican, was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for Uinta County, Wyoming in 1908. Early in 1910 Smith was appointed to a position on the State Board of Examiners by the Wyoming State Superintendent of Public Instruction. She ran for a second term as County Superintendent later that year, but lost to Democrat Iva Thomas Irish. Smith, a local teacher before her election, returned to teaching after her loss. Supporters encouraged Smith to seek another term as County Superintendent in 1912, but she turned down the opportunity.
