Iva Thomas was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Uinta County, Wyoming in 1904. She married and as Iva Thomas Irish continued her career in education. As the Democratic candidate, she was elected to the office in 1906. Irish was elected to another term in the office in 1910, beating out Republican rival Kate Smith. Two years later Irish won another race, again beating the Republican candidate Ethel Guild. In April of 1914 Irish announced that she would be a Democratic candidate for the office of State Superintendent for Public Instruction. She lost that race to the Republican candidate, Edith K. O. Clark.
