Isabel Eckles was elected to the State Board of Education of New Mexico in 1912. Eckles was the elected County Superintendent of Schools for Grant County and served for two terms in . In 1922 Eckles was elected to the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first woman in New Mexico to serve in a state-wide office.
