Mary E. Chrisman, a Democrat, was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Gallatin County, Montana in 1898. She won against the Republican party candidate Josephine Macleod. In 1900 Chrisman won a second term in the office, winning against Eleanor Ferris, the Republican candidate.
