Alice M. Beckwith was elected to County Clerk for Weld County, Colorado in the fall of 1897, after serving in the Clerk's office for a decade. She was the first woman to be elected to that office in Weld County, and the third in the state. She ran on an independent ticket, and was endorsed by the People's, Republican and Prohibition Parties. She received a thousand votes more than her opponent. She supported woman suffrage and registered to vote. Her son-in-law served as the deputy clerk.
