Mary J. Anderson, a Populist, was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Otero County, Colorado in 1897. She ran for a second term in 1899. Anderson campaigned in 1901 on the Republican ticket, but lost to the Democratic candidate Mary E. Lyon.
