Emma Barnes was elected Mayor of Geuda Springs, Kansas in 1893, with 82 votes polled. She led a council composed entirely of women, and was its youngest member. She appointed her husband, W.C. Barnes, who was also the editor and publisher of the Geuda Springs Herald, the city clerk.
