From collection Candidates

Siegfried, Julia
Dr. Julia Siegfried was the Socialist Party candidate for Circuit Court Judge in Madison County, Indiana, in 1908. She was the first woman in the state to run for the office. Her candidacy was challenged by politicians from opposing parties, and based on her sex. The Madison County Election Commission ruled that Siegfried had been properly nominated by a political party and that her name should remain on the ballot. Siegfried did not win the race. She was educated at the Eclectic College of Physicians and Surgeons in Indianapolis and graduated in 1901, setting up her own medical practice. Siegfried was an active member of the Socialist Party in Indiana
