From collection Candidates
Louisa P. Yokum was the Populist candidate for city treasurer of Rico, Dolores County, Colorado in 1894. She also served as the secretary of the Populist Convention of Rico in 1894. The following year Yokum was elected as the County Superintendent of Schools for Dolores County. While Superintendent Yokum caused an uproar when she refused to certify a teacher in her county due to his smoking tobacco. Given that Yokum's husband made his money from selling alcohol and tobacco her stance was considered hypercritical by some in the area.
