Kate Stoneman was the first woman lawyer to pass the New York State Bar. The year before she was admitted to the bar, Stoneman ran for presidential elector for the Equal Rights Party, supporting the 1884 candidate for president, Belva Lockwood. Stoneman's successful campaign to be admitted to the New York bar was facilitated by suffrage supporters in Albany, New York. Stoneman was an educator, activist, as well as pioneering lawyer.
