Etta Semple, of Ottawa, Kansas, was nominated in 1894 for the office of state superintendent of instruction. In 1904 Semple ran for the office of County Coroner on the Socialist Party ticket. She probably did not receive any votes. By 1904 Semple was running a sanitorium out of her own home in Ottawa. For many years it was the only hospital in the area. Semple was an atheist, free thinker, feminist and writer, and newspaper editor in Ottawa, Kansas. She wrote two novels with her husband and many articles for the free thought ewspaper, Licifer the Light-Bearer. Semple was the founder of the Kansa Free Thought Association.
