Gertrude Singleton from Illinois, headed a ticket to contest elections for the school board president in 1892 and lost. She contested elections on a ticket proposing herself as president, and Mrs. W.E. Clifford and Mrs. Isabella A.H. Prindle for trustees in the school board elections held on April 16th, 1892. She lost by a majority of 387 to a ticket headed by Mr. H.C.C. Miller for president. 1,312 people voted in the election, of which half were women.
