In 1918 Harriet Orvis ran for New York State Assembly as a Democratic candidate from St. Lawrence County. She lost to the Republican candidate, but received more votes than the Prohibitionist candidate. She was the vice-regent of her local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
