Dr. Annie News was elected to the School Committee of Newport, Rhode Island in 1876. She was one of the first two women elected. News was a physician and had studied at the University of Michigan and in Europe. Her medical practice was in New York and Rhode Island. News was the first woman elected to a medical society in the state.
