In 1906 Ella M. Stearns was first elected Audubon County, Iowa superintendent of schools. She had taught in local schools for many years before her election. She was re-elected several times. Stearns was born in Maine and came west as a child with her family. She attended Iowa State Teachers College. As an adult she was active in her church, PEO, the Columbian Club, and the local Woman's club.
