Myra C. Winkler was elected County Superintendent of Public Instruction for El Paso County, Texas in 1912. Winkler was re-elected continuously to the position through 1920, serving a total of 10 years in office. The Myra C. Winkler School was named after her, which opened in September, 1922 after her service as County Superintendent of Public Instruction. She was an Adjunct Professor of History at the College of Mines and Metallurgy, University of Texas starting in 1922 for three years, and continued to teach in public schools until her retirement in 1950.
