In 1899 Helen Barrett Montgomery was the first woman elected to the Board of Education in Rochester, New York. She was the first woman elected to any political office in Rochester. Montgomery was best known for her work as a leader in women's missionary work for the Baptist Church, as a civic reformer, and helped found the Rochester chapter of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union. In 1921 Montgomery was the first woman elected president of the Baptist Northern Convention.
