Katie L. Mullen was elected to a four year term in 1892 as the first woman to hold the office of County Superintendent of Schools for Plumas County, California. She was a graduate of the State Normal School (San Jose, CA), and started her career in teaching in 1888 in the mining town of La Porte, California. In June 1888 Mullen was appointed a member of the Plumas county board of education.
