From collection Candidates
Louisa S. Jurist was elected to the School Committee of the Forty-Seventh Ward in Philadelphia in 1909. She may have been the first Jewish women elected to any office in Philadelphia. Two years later Jurist was again a candidate, nominated by the Democrats and Keystone party, but she did not win another seat in a ward where only women nominated by Republicans won. Jurist was the manager of the House of Detention.
