From collection Candidates
In 1918 Belle C. Critchett was a candidate for the School Board of El Paso, Texas. Although she had lots of local support (including that of the local NAACP chapter) Critchett lost her race by forty-seven votes. She had been a long time school teacher before her marriage. Critchett was also a suffrage activist having been the president of the El Paso branch of the Texas Equal Suffrage Association. She stated that her "one aim in running as a candidate . . . [was] to be of service, to help in my small way, the boys and girls who will be our future citizens."
