In 1910 Maude Spickard was elected Stafford County, Kansas superintendent of schools. She was re-elected in 1912. Spickard also served as clerk of the district court (dates of term unknown). She was involved with the library board, active in the Methodist church, and PEO. Her husband-to-be died in the 1917 flu epidemic and she never married. Maude Spickard was the eldest of four children. Her mother taught public school as a young woman,and her father was involved in governance of their town and county, serving eight years as county commissioner as well as terms on the city council and board of education.
