In 1908 Jennie Fels (also known as Mrs. Samuel S. Fels) was elected to the twenty-seventh ward school committee in Philadelphia. She was elected to another term in 1911, nominated by the Republicans, Democrats, and Keystone parties. Fels, from a prominent Jewish family, was a member of the Philadelphia Ethical Society for many years. She was also active in promoting the rights of working women. Fels supported the arts in the city, especially the Curtis Institute and the Settlement Music School.
