Maria C. Ryan was the Silver Republican and Independent Silver candidate for County Superintendent of Schools in Granite County, Montana in 1896. She lost to the Democratic candidate, Mary E. Smith. In 1900 Ryan ran again and was elected to the office. In that race she was a fusion candidate, endorsed by the Silver Republicans, the Bryan Democrats, and the Peoples party.
