In 1896 Matilda H. Morris was candidate of the Municipal League for School Director of the tenth ward school committee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She ran again the following year as an Independent Republican party candidate but received only twelve votes. In 1898 Morris ran on the Prohibition party ticket and as an Independent, but still did not win a seat on the school committee. Two years later Morris was nominated by the Municipal League for the same seat.
