Martha Griswold was elected to the Board of Education of Jamestown, New York in 1889. She received more than double the number of votes of her male rival. Griswold was a founding member of the town's Political Equality Club in 1887. The club supported both Griswold and fellow club member, Kate S. Thompson in their races for the school board. Griswold was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
