Frances W. Perkins was elected to the Board of School Visitors in Middlefield, Connecticut. She served on the Board from at least 1893 to 1898. Perkins, whose family had assisted runaway slaves before the Civil War, taught in a school in Washington, DC for African American students in 1864.
