Gertrude Huntington was elected the Carbon County, Wyoming School Superintendent for two terms, from 1894, 1896,1898 and 1900. While in office, she oversaw the new construction of schools, the increased enrollment of students, and the implementation of textbook funding. In 1890 Gertrude and her sister Laura purchased and edited the first local newspaper, The Platte Valley Lyre. Gertrude married in 1905 and worked in her husband's law office. After his death in 1911 she continued running the insurance business they had both set up.
