Bessie Morehead, a Democrat, was elected as County Recorder for Cache County, Utah in 1896. The Democratic incumbent switched parties so he could run against Morehead. She won by 1,300 votes, despite her male opponent spreading rumors that he was a better member of the Church of Latter Day Saints than Morehead. Morehead was elected to a second term in 1898. Before her election Morehead was a teacher in the local schools
