Julia H. Bauer was the Republican candidate, for County Superintendent of Schools for Walla Walla County, Washington in 1884. She received thirty-nine percent of the votes cast and lost to her Democratic opponent. Bauer was perhaps the first Jewish woman to run for elected office in Washington. She was a gifted lingquist who spoke at least seven languages. Bauer was an early supporter of suffrage in Walla Walla and later moved to Portland, Oregon and was active in the Portlan Women's Club.
