Jane Mathilda Barnett was a candidate for County Superintendent of Schools for Pierce County, Washington in 1888. She came in third with only three percent of the votes cast. Barnett married in 1890. As J. M. Silsby, she ran again for the office, as the Prohibition party candidate in 1894, and received just over one percent of the votes cast.
