Ellen Jakeman was elected as County Treasurer of Utah County, Utah in 1896. Jakeman was the first woman to serve as treasurer of Utah County. She was a well-known writer and supporter of suffrage and equal rights for women. Her article in the Desert Weekly in August 1891 delineated the potential power of women in the Utah political landscape. Jakeman was sought after as a public speaker.
