Mary Richmond Southmayd was the Democratic candidate for County Superintendent of Schools for Custer County, Montana, in 1886. She lost to the Republican candidate, Louisa M. Cooley. Southmayd married Joseph R. McKay and ran again for the office in 1892 as the Peoples party candidate, but lost again.
