Grace Smith was a Republican candidate for County Recorder of Denver County, Colorado in 1912. An article in The Colorado Statesman, an African American newspaper, assured readers that she was supportive of "Colored" citizens of the county. Four years later she was the party candidate in the primary race for State Superintendent of Schools . She lost to her opponent Helen Wixson. Smith later served on the State Board of Examiners. As Grace Ellen Shoe she had served as the president of the Colorado Teachers Association.
