Vashti Stone was elected as County Clerk of Washita County, Oklahoma in 1914. When Stone attempted to file for the office as a Democrat, the local county election board refused to let her file. She sued, and was represented by a Democratic state senator, who argued that because women were "electors" in school races, they were qualified for other offices at the county level. The state supreme court justices agreed and Stone went on to win her races.
