Martha Moore Avery was a Democratic Socialist candidate for the Boston School Committee in 1901. She did not win that race. Avery worked on socialist causes from the 1890s to 1902. She soon converted to Catholicism and publicly opposed her former socialist beliefs. By 1912 Avery was an anti-suffragist.
