From collection Candidates
Anna L. Stanley was the Democratic candidate for County Superintendent of Schools for Ouray County, Colorado in 1906. She won the race over her opponent, the Republican candidate Jennie L. Brownlee. In 1905 Stanley was appointed to serve on the Ouray school board to fill the seat of Mary Lewis, who had been elected as County Superintendent of Schools. Stanley was teaching in the local elementary school. By September of 1906 newspapers reported that Stanley and Lewis were both contending over the Democratic nomination for the office of County Superintendent. When Stanley won the nomination, some of the local women worked against her candidacy. A local newspaper accused these women of lies and slander against Stanley. Stanley married Arthur Grabow in 1907, but retained her maiden name while in office.
