Grace C. Stanley was elected as County Superintendent of Schools for San Bernardino County, California in 1914. She served in the office until 1922 when she became state Commissioner of Elementary Education. Stanley was a graduate of Stanford University and taught in Long Beach schools before becoming a County Superintendent.
