L. Clare Davis was the first woman elected to the Stockton, California school board in 1897. She was endorsed by both Republican and Democratic parties. Davis ran for several terms and remained in the position until 1912. In 1907 she ran against colleague Dr. Minerva Goodman, the school district chief medical official. Davis won the race by a slim margin. A graduate of Mills College, Davis had a long career as a newspaper reporter and then editor at least two California newspapers, until her retirement in 1932.
