Janet Geary was the first woman elected to the Santa Rosa, California school board. She was elected in 1895, and beat out a male opponent by only three votes. Another woman, Eva French, also ran, but did not win a seat. Geary's husband Thomas J. served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1890-1895.
