Anna G. Herbst was elected to the School Board of Libby, Montana in 1913. She ran against several male candidates and easily won a seat on the board. A newspaper in Helena, Montana reported that the sitting male members of the school board planned to resign over the election of two women that year. Herbst was president of state Woman's Christian Temperance Union by 1919.
