Martha McLeish was elected to the school board of Glencoe, New Trier Township, Cook County, Illinois about 1896. McLeish was a graduate of Vassar College and served as the principal of Rockford Seminary from 1884 to 1888. During her tenure she prepared the seminary for collegiate status. As the president of the Women's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society of the West she merged the organization with its eastern counterpart. McLeish was a life long supporter of progressive education, and municipal reform.
