Virginia Bradley was one of three women elected School Directors in Nevada City, California in 1883. A newspaper reporting on the event noted: "Some men set up the boast that they can beat women at anything. If those men who were candidates in Nevada City thought thus, they have probably changed their minds." The women won by more thatn 60 votes.
