In 1916 Mrs. Artie Lewis, a Republican, won the office of County Superintendent of Schools for Montezuma County, Colorado. She defeated her Democratic opponent, Mary E. Taylor. Lewis was raised in the mid-West and moved to Colorado as a young woman. She was a teacher.
