In 1916 Mrs. Artie Lewis, a Republican, won the office of Montezuma County (Colorado) Superintendent of Schools. She defeated her Democratic opponent, Mary E. Taylor. She was raised in the mid-West and moved to Colorado as a young woman. She was a teacher.
