Mary L. Geffs was a Socialist Party candidate in Colorado for University Trustee in 1908,  Secretary of State in 1910, the Colorado House of Representatives in 1912, presidential elector in 1916, and Governor as well as Supreme Court Justice in 1918. She did not win any of these races. Geffs was born in the Midwest. She married young and was widowed with four children to support at an early age. She supported her family as a factory worker and later as a journalist and public speaker. Her writing and talks focused upon social reform issues including woman suffrage, labor rights, and education. She joined the National Woman Suffrage Association and was one of its lecturers.
