In 1916 Luella Johnson, a Republican, ran unsuccessfully for the office of Gunnison County, Colorardo school superintendent. She lost to Verna Waterman,, a Democrat, who served the 1917-1918 term. Johnson had previously held the position in 1906-08 and 1914-16. In one written exchange, she asked "how do we teach the foreign child?"
