Mary E. Garbutt was a Socialist Party candidate for Los Angeles School Board in 1909. In 1920 Garbutt campaigned as the Socialist party candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives (California's Ninth congressional district). She received 5.5% of the total vote. As a member of the Socialist party, she was a spokeswoman for protective labor legislation and female unionization. Garbutt was a delegate at the 1912, and perhaps other, Socialist Party conventions.
