In 1894 Alice M. Catlin campaigned unsuccessfully for the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Colorado. She ran on the Populist party ticket. Mrs. A.J. Peavey (Republican), Mrs. Mary C.C. Bradford (Democrat), and Mr. A.B. Copeland (Prohibition) were also candidates. Peavey won. After losing the election Catlin was appointed as assignable clerk in the state senate. The following year Catlin ran for County Superintendent of Schools for Montrose County and won the race. She was an experienced educator working at Corry High School in Pennsylvania, before moving to Colorado.
