Louisa G. Murdock was elected to the School Board of Louisa County, Iowa in 1882. She then went on to serve two terms as County Superintendent of Schools for Louisa County, beginning in 1886.

Nannie Torrence was elected County Superintendent of Schools for Keokuk County, Iowa in 1887. She served in the office until 1890, the year Torrence married, David Stockman a prominent attorney in her area.
